The Significance of the “Wibbly” Tooth!

I’ve been guest blogging lately for a couple of sites and I’ve found myself speaking about teeth a lot hence the prompt to write down our Vital Moms thoughts on teeth in a health alert.  I have been mostly writing about a child’s transition from their physical body to their chemical body at around the age of 7 and the changes that take place in their world as a result. Certainly a physical indication that this transition is underway is the “wibbling” (as our kids call it) of a baby tooth. At no other time in a child’s life will they grow and develop as fast as they do from 0-7.

When I was young losing teeth resembled growing up and the tooth fairy. I would hear adults around me saying “congratulations you’re a big girl now!” and yet I was still a child. I like other children around the world would place my tooth in a clear glass, fill it with water and place it purposefully on the kitchen window ledge so the fairy could see it from outside. As a mother watching my children loose teeth for the first time sparked for us a different conversation and celebration. Each child had their favourite organic cake baked and was educated on the changes that were afoot. A very different conversation to “you’re a big girl now.”

Well you might be thinking it’s just a tooth that’s fallen out. And yes you’re correct the simplicity is that a tooth has fallen out and another tooth will likely take its place however I too feel that it is an exciting time as the body sets about undertaking the vast number of changes required for this to take place. The importance of this transition and acknowledging the “work” the baby teeth have done to contribute to a person’s future health I don’t feel is something that can be glossed over with the simplicity of it’s just a tooth.

When my kids where young I read many educational philosophy books including Steiner who speaks about the first seven years of life being about the physical body. I remember some time ago now (actually a decade!) before nodding off to sleep I asked a simple question “what comes next… after the physical body?”  I drifted off with an open and curious mind and woke in what seemed like minutes later.  I sat upright, reached for my paper and pen, switched on my bedside table light and began writing down everything being said over and over again in my head. When I stopped writing, I immediately drifted back to sleep to awake in the morning with a few “Arhas!”

I had written that night about three “cycles” (as a vital mom called it!) – physical, chemical and emotional.  I too used to wonder why they, physical, chemical and emotional, ran off my tongue so well in that order until I noticed that indeed there was an order.  I’ve always imagined the physical, chemical and emotional selves like the points of a triangle. As we journey through the course of life the triangle rotates so a different aspect of our self is pointing forward. The other two are still present percolating in the back ground and doing there “thing.”

Every seven years we “see” the triangle rotate, transitioning from one to another.

Here’s a snippet of what I wrote that night:

  • 0-7 = physical (growth and neuronal development)
  • 7-14 = chemical (puberty)
  • 14-21 = emotional (the dependent vs. independent tussle)
  • 21-28 = physical (back to the gym to get buffed and shined to catch a mate!)
There is more however that’s a whole other conversation for another day. After looking at what I wrote the next question I asked was what signifies these changes. Of course as a chiropractor and mum I looked to the body for those answers. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed!

Dr Ben Olstein, DDS a functional bio-compatible holistic dentist of over 43+ years and who is my personal dentist says…

“At birth the baby teeth are like pioneering plants they provide the right positioning for the permanent teeth and they too provide the framework for the bone and muscles to be balanced. The transition to the adult (aka permanent) teeth is important because the baby teeth vibrate at a higher frequency than adult teeth and as such are better equipped from a meridian frequency perspective to balance out AND create a pathway for the organs they are related to.  The transition from small to big also allows for the natural growth of the jaw in relation to the whole face.”

Wow! Okay let’s pause here and look at it this way…

What if we considered each individual tooth as an organ? Would going to the dentist take on a new meaning? Would looking after your child’s teeth take on a new meaning? Would making sure your child had good nutrition (organic, non-processed food) take on a new meaning? I believe it would. Every tooth in your body and in your child’s body in fact has its own nerve supply, blood supply, cellular composition and their own vibrational energy. It would be wise to consider each tooth as an organ in their own right!

Clear neurological (nerve system) communication between your child’s brain, teeth and the organs the teeth are associated with should be one of your highest priorities as a parent. Just as every organ is mapped to an emotion so too is every tooth mapped to an organ (itself and other). Interference to the master communicating super highway – the nerve system – has the potential than to challenge the way a child expresses health later in life.  So would it be wise for your child (and yourself) to get checked by a qualified chiropractor who LOVES checking kids? YES!

Question… Have you noticed the adult teeth coming through are yellower in colour?

Let me put a myth to rest here. It is not because you’re an irresponsible parent and not having them brush enough! Contrary to that thought the yellow colour comes from dentine. The teeth look yellower because of the younger pearly whites against them, making a stark difference. The adult teeth are in fact denser and have more dentine substructure and thus look yellower because the dentine is darker. I can hear you saying “that makes sense!”

This raises a good point – brushing teeth, what’s necessary?

When our children were young I didn’t often brush their teeth, certainly not every day. I relied on their saliva to do its work. I understood the role saliva plays in providing the protection they required. I had the confidence that I was providing the correct nutrition for the body to do what it was designed to do – grow, heal and regenerate. The saliva is the immune system of the mouth “put together” specifically and uniquely for the person. It lubricates like an oil (I love that visual) so a person can use all the muscles and soft tissues.

Dr Ben says…

“saliva houses a balanced bacterial colony to fight all potential infections. Contrary to the common data that tonsils are the first line of defense it is actually a person’s saliva. The saliva alone can contribute to healing the teeth through remineralisation right through life. Saliva is affected by everything throughout the body e.g. hormones, stress and so forth so it’s a good marker for health. Hence it is important for the mouth to have an alkaline base for the saliva to carry out its function. In other words good nutrition is of utmost importance”

For us when our kids were of teeth cleaning age we did so USING OUR FINGERS after meals so there are no sugars left on teeth. Dr Ben of course concurs with this!

So now your child has hit the all important transition age, a time of great celebration as the body undertakes yet again another set of challenges. At the age of 6.5yrs to 7.5yrs children are beginning to lose their baby teeth. Prior to these changes the adult tooth undertakes a tremendous amount of scissoring – up and down – as it begins to slowly but purposefully push its way up and push the baby tooth out. This is the same scissoring action used when a baby tooth is scissoring up and down and pushing through for the first time. As the teeth begin their scissoring action generally over the months prior there are changes in the cranium. The teeth coming through are bigger and require more space. As the cranium expands perfectly for the new “bigger” teeth to fit there is an impact internally on the pituitary gland, the master hormone gland of the body which of course instigates the beginning of the next stage – chemicals and puberty… beautiful!

This too reiterates the importance of making sure a child’s nerve system is clear of neurological interference in other words you want to make sure there are no road blocks on their highway! This is because your child’s cranium (and your own!) houses the brain and coming off of the brain is the spinal cord and together they form the central nerve system which is of utmost importance for the child’s future growth, development and expression of health.

As the cranium makes room for the adult teeth to settle in to their new found home it too marks a significant transition in how the child sees and interacts with their world. The child subtly begins to seek more of an understanding about the “self”.  Their mind slowly but surely becomes more abstract seeing themselves for the first time as separate to others. Caution begins to be demonstrated and fear can start to limit certain behaviour. You too will notice children sitting for longer periods of time; more pensive in thought. What a well guided body! We found with our children that they began to ask “how” questions as opposed to “why” questions. We had questions asked about how rain forms, how did the plants get here, how do the trees grow, how did humans develop as well as many other wonderful “how” questions. These were purposefully thought out questions; fascinating to witness. You could almost see the cognitive wheels going round in their head!

Personally as each of our children has transitioned into their adult teeth we have observed changes in their gait (walk). There is a direct relationship between the cranium, the hips, knees, ankles and gait. Changes in the cranium will lead to changes in posture and therefore how a child walks. Ankles become unstable and the hips “lock” in an attempt to give the body support and stability. We noticed both our boys altered the way they ran when they were in the 7-9 year age bracket. Once great runners they, almost overnight, became labored in running style. It was really interesting to observe. However more importantly we had them note their changes so they could be empowered by its progress.

I feel as children transition from the 0-7 year age group to the 7-14 year age group we need to pause as parents, as adults and celebrate. So many wonderful changes are occurring that if we don’t stop to “see” and observe them we miss it in a time frame that feels as quick as missing that first step. This is such an important age as their teeth set the stage for future organ health.

To support your child’s changes it’s wise I feel to have health advocates who support you in the choices you are making for your children e.g. a chiropractor, a functional dentist and the Vital Moms club! Create a quiver for your child within which is a qualified chiropractor, functional dentistry, organic non-processed food, sunlight, fresh air and of course exercise… if you do YOU WILL be giving them a wonderful start to life! Setting them up well when they are young will set them up well for their future.

The Lethal Routine

Whilst I was a student, many decades ago know, I had a wonderful teacher who encouraged me to do my routine differently…for a day. He encouraged me to do this in an effort to not only use both sides of my body but in an attempt to stop taking what I do for granted and appreciate the body I have chosen to live in. So I set about doing a few things he suggested of which I quickly come to realize how automatic my life was, striving to be the most efficient I could be quick to get things down without thought or pause.

And seeing the Vital Moms ezine is about “Firsts” I decided to create a challenge were the “lethal switched off routine” of our daily life could be broken, if only momentarily. You can make this a family thing to do if you have kids and if you have grandchildren make it a game and step aside to see what happens. If you own a business and have team members incorporate this into your work place culture for a month of fun!

 Here goes…

I have listed for you 38 things we automatically do and I’ve either asked you to do the opposite or make a note of what you do. Only choose 30 or 31 of the things because the challenge only goes for a month. They are all things you possibly take for granted, don’t think about any more and or unconsciously strive to complete in the most efficient way as you rush out the door to get somewhere. Simply select a thing to do each day for 30 or 31 days and do it differently. Choose only one a day because the point is for you to attune to your body and note what you take for granted. For example perhaps it’s a “routine” that now takes longer than expected or eating is now slower (not a bad thing!), tying the shoelaces is more challenging or drying yourself after a shower now takes on a whole new meaning! Not only will this create immense frustration within you as you attempt to go about your daily “routine” less efficiently however it too will be fun and stimulating.

It’s time to appreciate and celebrate how weird, wonderful and wacky life is when we stop and attempt to do our daily “lethal routine” differently!

Here are 38 items for you to work through in no particular order. This is by no means an exhaustive list. If you have some wonderful creative additions to this list please share them on our Vital Moms FaceBook page to let us all know.

Above all enjoy and have FUN with it!

Choose one “thing” to do differently per day for 30 days:

  1. Brush your teeth with the other hand
  2. Uncross your legs when sitting
  3. Wash the dishes starting from the other side
  4. Fall asleep facing the other way
  5. Note how you automatically dry yourself a certain way after a shower and do it a different way!
  6. Brush your hair with the other hand
  7. Switch your mouse around to the other side (now that will challenge a few I am sure)
  8. Scroll your phone or mobile device (e.g. iPad) with the other hand and finger
  9. Sleep on the other side of the bed
  10. Change seats at the dinner table (if you are really routine orientated!)
  11. Sweep the floor with broom in the other hand
  12. Empty the dishwasher from the other side
  13. Set the table as a left hander would eat or if left handed as a right hander would eat
  14. Eat as a left hander if you are right handed and vice versa
  15. Write a shopping list with your right hand if you are left handed and left hand if you are right handed
  16. Pluck your eyebrows with your other hand
  17. Put your organic make up on (if you wear it) with the other hand
  18. Rule a line with the other hand going the other way
  19. Blow dry your hair with the other hand/arm
  20. Drive the kids to school via a different route
  21. This is for the kids… skate board with the opposite foot forward
  22. Hammer a nail with the other hand
  23. Unlock your front door with the other hand
  24. Kick the ball with the other foot
  25. Throw a ball with the other arm
  26. Hug on the opposite side (left side to left side and heart to heart!)
  27. Lather with soap with the opposite hand
  28. Step with a different leg first when putting clothes on in the morning
  29. Mix contents in a bowl with the opposite hand
  30. Stir a pot with the opposite hand
  31. Eat chocolate with the opposite hand
  32. Paint a picture with the opposite hand
  33. Use calculator with the opposite hand
  34. This is another one for the kids… surf with the opposite foot forward
  35. Do your belt up the opposite way
  36. Use a spoon in other hand
  37. Drink out of a glass with other hand
  38. Pour from a jug with other hand

Teach Your Child To Read The Ingredients!

At times I feel like a giant ogre with my kids as I harp on about food and making wise choices. I am sure as a parent you have felt this at times too. I unapologetically say “No!” in front of people now if I feel the food offered is not appropriate. I’m no longer concerned what other parents may think of my song and dance about what our kids can and cannot have.  I make sure our kids go to places with food so something is available for them if they decide within themselves to make a wise choice not to eat what is offered to them. They know we eat organic food and that we approach health differently to the majority of their friends. They too are comfortable with saying to people “no thank you.”

As I was registering our boys for this year’s Rugby season I was under no illusion that companies are happy to sponsor kids activities – Kellogs, Nestle etc – and provide “snacks” when they go to register. What I didn’t expect to see in the goodie bag was a chart titled “Key Foods For A Rugby Players Pantry” listing foods “appropriate” for kids and adults alike. My mouth dropped when I read it so much so that I took a photo to show you what they were recommending!

Let me go through and point out a few of the items on the list and shed some light on them. A high number of items on the list suggest coming from cans in fact there are six on the list and a possible nine depending on how you purchase these items.

Here’s a light shedder…

Independent laboratory tests found a toxic food-can lining ingredient associated with birth defects of the male and female reproductive systems in over half of 97 cans of name-brand fruit, vegetables, soda, and other commonly eaten canned goods. The study was spearheaded by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and targeted the chemical bisphenol A (BPA), a plastic and resin ingredient used to line metal food and drink cans. There are no government safety standards limiting the amount of BPA in canned food. While some companies are phasing out the use of BPA they are instead replacing BPA with BPS (bisphenol S). BPS was an originally deterred chemical and its now being used in products according to a study conducted from researchers at the University of Texas and later published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Saying no to BPA (bisphenol A) worked and companies have reduced the amount they use. Now it is time to say no to BPS which is in fact doing the same thing as BPA, although thought to be “milder” it is estrogen mimic. It is however a chemical non-the-less.(biosphenol A) (biosphenol A) because it mimics estrogen in the body, and has been linked to a variety of health A (biosphenol A) because it mimics estrogen in the body, and has been linked to a variety of health challenges – cancer, reproduction defects, neurological defects, obesity and diabetes certainly made a difference. Now it is time to “SAY NO to BPS.” BPS is in fact doing the same thing as the BPA although thought to be milder in its estrogen mimic! A chemical none-the-less.

Next up is trim milk powder and low fat biscuits! Gosh where do I start with this? We seem to be obsessed as a society with consuming no fat. My motto for our family is if you are going to eat something then consume it as close to it’s original form as possible, this includes eating the fat contained within a food. I feel the danger comes when we begin to pull apart food, extracting the “fat” and then attempt to “put it back together.” The biggest health by-in by societies across the globe in the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s was the need for less fat and today we are one of the fattest populations on earth. Clearly that practice didn’t work! Fat is required and I urge you to be leary of “low fat,” “trimmed” “foods.” Again read the ingredients and look at the marketing of the packet. If it says “low” anything or has a “tick of approval” put it back on the shelf and run to the perimeter of your local supermarket where you can continue to shop. Least processed ingredients are kept on the perimeter of the stores whilst all processed foods are contained in the middle where no refrigeration is required! Umm…

Last one I want to draw your attention to is Milo. Our kids each had a 200g can of Milo in their “goodie” bag. When we arrived home I asked them to each get their cans out of their goodie bag. We sat on the couch and went through the ingredients – milk solids, vegetable oil, maltodextrin, flavour and soy lecithin just some of the ingredients.  They asked the question “mum, why do people say it’s okay to have a little if you don’t have it all the time?” It was a beautiful question and one I took a while to answer during which I shared this quote with them…

“It is the inability to see the effects of chronic, low-level toxicities on human health that has been, and remains, our greatest failing as intelligent beings.”

                                                   - Dr Boyd Haley

In other words I shared how the “toxic little times” add up over time affecting the nerve system and our ability to express health to our highest level. We then create a health situation, e.g. dis-ease and at times disease that challenges us to wake up and change the way we do life. Some of you right now might be thinking “she’s taking it too far.” My response is it’s actually not about the Milo it’s about the opportunity to educate. If I’m presented with an opportunity to educate my children on health, in this situation ingredients, packaging and marketing then I will jump at the opportunity to share the wisdom in seeing what most don’t. The kids understood the “lesson” and by the end of the conversation and openness in sharing they happily threw the cans of Milo away settling instead for a beautiful homemade organic hot chocolate with oat milk, all made from scratch!
