The Significance of the “Wibbly” Tooth!

I’ve been guest blogging lately for a couple of sites and I’ve found myself speaking about teeth a lot hence the prompt to write down our Vital Moms thoughts on teeth in a health alert.  I have been mostly writing about a child’s transition from their physical body to their chemical body at around the age of 7 and the changes that take place in their world as a result. Certainly a physical indication that this transition is underway is the “wibbling” (as our kids call it) of a baby tooth. At no other time in a child’s life will they grow and develop as fast as they do from 0-7.

When I was young losing teeth resembled growing up and the tooth fairy. I would hear adults around me saying “congratulations you’re a big girl now!” and yet I was still a child. I like other children around the world would place my tooth in a clear glass, fill it with water and place it purposefully on the kitchen window ledge so the fairy could see it from outside. As a mother watching my children loose teeth for the first time sparked for us a different conversation and celebration. Each child had their favourite organic cake baked and was educated on the changes that were afoot. A very different conversation to “you’re a big girl now.”

Well you might be thinking it’s just a tooth that’s fallen out. And yes you’re correct the simplicity is that a tooth has fallen out and another tooth will likely take its place however I too feel that it is an exciting time as the body sets about undertaking the vast number of changes required for this to take place. The importance of this transition and acknowledging the “work” the baby teeth have done to contribute to a person’s future health I don’t feel is something that can be glossed over with the simplicity of it’s just a tooth.

When my kids where young I read many educational philosophy books including Steiner who speaks about the first seven years of life being about the physical body. I remember some time ago now (actually a decade!) before nodding off to sleep I asked a simple question “what comes next… after the physical body?”  I drifted off with an open and curious mind and woke in what seemed like minutes later.  I sat upright, reached for my paper and pen, switched on my bedside table light and began writing down everything being said over and over again in my head. When I stopped writing, I immediately drifted back to sleep to awake in the morning with a few “Arhas!”

I had written that night about three “cycles” (as a vital mom called it!) – physical, chemical and emotional.  I too used to wonder why they, physical, chemical and emotional, ran off my tongue so well in that order until I noticed that indeed there was an order.  I’ve always imagined the physical, chemical and emotional selves like the points of a triangle. As we journey through the course of life the triangle rotates so a different aspect of our self is pointing forward. The other two are still present percolating in the back ground and doing there “thing.”

Every seven years we “see” the triangle rotate, transitioning from one to another.

Here’s a snippet of what I wrote that night:

  • 0-7 = physical (growth and neuronal development)
  • 7-14 = chemical (puberty)
  • 14-21 = emotional (the dependent vs. independent tussle)
  • 21-28 = physical (back to the gym to get buffed and shined to catch a mate!)
There is more however that’s a whole other conversation for another day. After looking at what I wrote the next question I asked was what signifies these changes. Of course as a chiropractor and mum I looked to the body for those answers. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed!

Dr Ben Olstein, DDS a functional bio-compatible holistic dentist of over 43+ years and who is my personal dentist says…

“At birth the baby teeth are like pioneering plants they provide the right positioning for the permanent teeth and they too provide the framework for the bone and muscles to be balanced. The transition to the adult (aka permanent) teeth is important because the baby teeth vibrate at a higher frequency than adult teeth and as such are better equipped from a meridian frequency perspective to balance out AND create a pathway for the organs they are related to.  The transition from small to big also allows for the natural growth of the jaw in relation to the whole face.”

Wow! Okay let’s pause here and look at it this way…

What if we considered each individual tooth as an organ? Would going to the dentist take on a new meaning? Would looking after your child’s teeth take on a new meaning? Would making sure your child had good nutrition (organic, non-processed food) take on a new meaning? I believe it would. Every tooth in your body and in your child’s body in fact has its own nerve supply, blood supply, cellular composition and their own vibrational energy. It would be wise to consider each tooth as an organ in their own right!

Clear neurological (nerve system) communication between your child’s brain, teeth and the organs the teeth are associated with should be one of your highest priorities as a parent. Just as every organ is mapped to an emotion so too is every tooth mapped to an organ (itself and other). Interference to the master communicating super highway – the nerve system – has the potential than to challenge the way a child expresses health later in life.  So would it be wise for your child (and yourself) to get checked by a qualified chiropractor who LOVES checking kids? YES!

Question… Have you noticed the adult teeth coming through are yellower in colour?

Let me put a myth to rest here. It is not because you’re an irresponsible parent and not having them brush enough! Contrary to that thought the yellow colour comes from dentine. The teeth look yellower because of the younger pearly whites against them, making a stark difference. The adult teeth are in fact denser and have more dentine substructure and thus look yellower because the dentine is darker. I can hear you saying “that makes sense!”

This raises a good point – brushing teeth, what’s necessary?

When our children were young I didn’t often brush their teeth, certainly not every day. I relied on their saliva to do its work. I understood the role saliva plays in providing the protection they required. I had the confidence that I was providing the correct nutrition for the body to do what it was designed to do – grow, heal and regenerate. The saliva is the immune system of the mouth “put together” specifically and uniquely for the person. It lubricates like an oil (I love that visual) so a person can use all the muscles and soft tissues.

Dr Ben says…

“saliva houses a balanced bacterial colony to fight all potential infections. Contrary to the common data that tonsils are the first line of defense it is actually a person’s saliva. The saliva alone can contribute to healing the teeth through remineralisation right through life. Saliva is affected by everything throughout the body e.g. hormones, stress and so forth so it’s a good marker for health. Hence it is important for the mouth to have an alkaline base for the saliva to carry out its function. In other words good nutrition is of utmost importance”

For us when our kids were of teeth cleaning age we did so USING OUR FINGERS after meals so there are no sugars left on teeth. Dr Ben of course concurs with this!

So now your child has hit the all important transition age, a time of great celebration as the body undertakes yet again another set of challenges. At the age of 6.5yrs to 7.5yrs children are beginning to lose their baby teeth. Prior to these changes the adult tooth undertakes a tremendous amount of scissoring – up and down – as it begins to slowly but purposefully push its way up and push the baby tooth out. This is the same scissoring action used when a baby tooth is scissoring up and down and pushing through for the first time. As the teeth begin their scissoring action generally over the months prior there are changes in the cranium. The teeth coming through are bigger and require more space. As the cranium expands perfectly for the new “bigger” teeth to fit there is an impact internally on the pituitary gland, the master hormone gland of the body which of course instigates the beginning of the next stage – chemicals and puberty… beautiful!

This too reiterates the importance of making sure a child’s nerve system is clear of neurological interference in other words you want to make sure there are no road blocks on their highway! This is because your child’s cranium (and your own!) houses the brain and coming off of the brain is the spinal cord and together they form the central nerve system which is of utmost importance for the child’s future growth, development and expression of health.

As the cranium makes room for the adult teeth to settle in to their new found home it too marks a significant transition in how the child sees and interacts with their world. The child subtly begins to seek more of an understanding about the “self”.  Their mind slowly but surely becomes more abstract seeing themselves for the first time as separate to others. Caution begins to be demonstrated and fear can start to limit certain behaviour. You too will notice children sitting for longer periods of time; more pensive in thought. What a well guided body! We found with our children that they began to ask “how” questions as opposed to “why” questions. We had questions asked about how rain forms, how did the plants get here, how do the trees grow, how did humans develop as well as many other wonderful “how” questions. These were purposefully thought out questions; fascinating to witness. You could almost see the cognitive wheels going round in their head!

Personally as each of our children has transitioned into their adult teeth we have observed changes in their gait (walk). There is a direct relationship between the cranium, the hips, knees, ankles and gait. Changes in the cranium will lead to changes in posture and therefore how a child walks. Ankles become unstable and the hips “lock” in an attempt to give the body support and stability. We noticed both our boys altered the way they ran when they were in the 7-9 year age bracket. Once great runners they, almost overnight, became labored in running style. It was really interesting to observe. However more importantly we had them note their changes so they could be empowered by its progress.

I feel as children transition from the 0-7 year age group to the 7-14 year age group we need to pause as parents, as adults and celebrate. So many wonderful changes are occurring that if we don’t stop to “see” and observe them we miss it in a time frame that feels as quick as missing that first step. This is such an important age as their teeth set the stage for future organ health.

To support your child’s changes it’s wise I feel to have health advocates who support you in the choices you are making for your children e.g. a chiropractor, a functional dentist and the Vital Moms club! Create a quiver for your child within which is a qualified chiropractor, functional dentistry, organic non-processed food, sunlight, fresh air and of course exercise… if you do YOU WILL be giving them a wonderful start to life! Setting them up well when they are young will set them up well for their future.

If you would like assistance with finding a chiropractor in your area please go to our online Vital Health Professional Directory or email Lotika my PA at support@vitalmoms.com and we will assist you with finding one.

The 10 Biggest Health Care Lies Moms Ought to Know!

What prompted me to write this article was a conversation I had with a mother about what health is and what it is not. This lead me to looking at what the 10 biggest health care lies are that people are told and have brought into without question. I also feel as a result of the conversation that it is time to stop calling mainstream health “health” because there’s not one thing within mainstream health that is based on health! Personally I have not used the medical system for well over 23 years. I birthed all my children at home, last was a breech birth, have never given nor do I offer medications to my children, do not vaccinate, have no family medical doctor, do not take medications myself and as such have no medicine cupboard at home. So… where does that place me and I imagine you?

What part of ‘mainstream health’ do you and I belong too?

The short answer is none! The truth is the health system that is currently seen to be mainstream does not espouse a health message… you have to be ‘sick’ to enter it. It’s a ‘system’ based on a narrow, rigid, ignorant and profitable understanding of the body and its supposed incapability’s. It’s practiced by those who profit and is strongly defended from anyone (individual with a powerful voice) or anything (organisation) coming close to toppling it in some way. The lies told at the top filter down without question.

What are the lies that people are told?

Lie #1 Drugs will ‘give you health’

Oh my, this is incongruent in and of itself isn’t it? Drugs do not make you healthy despite the clever advertising; PR pushes and engineered marketing messages. Pharmaceuticals do not prevent disease. Health is expressed by choice NOT chance. You are not lucky to have good health you created it, you didn’t “get” it from somewhere. Expressing health is the result of you choosing to do so not because a drug gave it to you. When you decide to take your health into your hands your life changes; you become empowered to make the decisions for yourself and your children. Health is expressed through your nerve system, the master communicating system of the body. A nerve system with clear communication can better heal itself.

Lie #2 Only medical doctors are the experts in health

I prefer to say they are specialists in ‘sickness and disease’. You must be sick to enter the system. Within a medical program there is very little (if any at all) education on wellness and prevention or nutrition let alone time spent on the nerve system – the master communicating system of the body – and its role in health. Expecting a medical person to navigate health with you is like asking the car mechanic to service your computer! They are just not well versed in it. There are however health professionals that have spent time at University or Colleges to learn about health, the human body and its expression. Chiropractors are health professionals who have spent years and years studying the nerve system from a health perspective rather than a diseased perspective. Understanding your relationship with your nerve system will assist you with placing your health back in your hands!

Lie #3 To prevent we need to screen

This is a subtle and yet powerful lie, they will screen you for ‘x’ whilst perpetuating the lie that they are preventing at worst and solving at best for example breast cancer. Odd. Millions of dollars are donated every day, week, month and year and has been for decades. And yet they are no closer to solving the cancer puzzle. Why? Doesn’t that make you think what kind of research is being done? Screening isn’t preventing these diseases because that would be saving your life. There is no money in that. In fact, virtually all the popular screening practices are done to promote diseases. Raise the veil and lift the illusion that these are in place to protect you, they aren’t. Prevention is about you taking action, reading, educating yourself on your body, lifestyle and food and your nerve systems relationship to ALL that! Remember in any area of your life where you feel disempowered somebody (individual or organisation) will overpower you.

Lie #4 Health insurance will keep you healthy

People who have health insurance have more done to them. Period. There is less protection when you have health insurance and more so when people have private health insurance. It perpetuates the subtle mechanistic motto of ‘let’s keep you sick’. The only health insurance you have is to educate yourself on your body, the nerve systems role in your health expression, understand how toxins in your environment and food contribute to diminished health, acknowledge that what you think about you bring about and get moving! I choose to be healthy, by choice NOT BY chance. A contract with a health insurance company will NOT give you health nor give you life… only YOU can make the change to express health differently and choose to live a different life!

Lie #5 Vaccines make you healthy

The lie here is a simple one – your body is incapable of creating immunity! The marketing and the fear mongering around this simple and yet profound lie has emerged as one of the greatest falsehoods in western culture. The under current is this… in order for you to be guarded against ‘diseases carried by others’ which is a false statement in and of itself (see Lie #9) you need something from the outside to protect you. Their answer is vaccinations. There are three ways to look at immunity – 1) as vaccinating parent 2) as an anti-vaccination parent 3) a parent who is pro-health. I personally have chosen the latter. If you would like assistance with switching how you look at health and vaccines go to Vital Moms and read the vaccination report! It will be an eye opener.

Lie #6 Bad luck

Bad luck and chance play a big role in mainstream health and thus how health is educated to people. The mainstream health care system wants you to believe that on that day you simply had bad luck. As such the only way to get good luck back into your life is by their pre-determined and “proven” interventions! Warning: once you enter you virtually have no role to play in your health or healing. The disappearance of your health on that day happened because of bad luck and chance. Your health becomes managed by their drugs, their screening, their surgeries and their interventions. Look out.

Lie #7 Disease is the result of bad genes

See lie # 6 for the response to this one well. The lie states that disease is spontaneous and will strike at anytime, without warning; it will just happen. Scientists take apart the genes one by one to perpetuate this lie. People are now being told that it is not your fault … it’s your genes! Bad genes equals … not your fault equals … drug for that. A classic example is the gene that has more recently been found for obesity. Some researchers estimate as many as 80 per cent – have inherited genes that predispose them to storing fat. Have you noticed that more and more people are being ‘classified’ as obese? The bench mark has been moved to create a problem (genes) of which the drug companies swoon in to solve (new drug) because seriously apparently it’s not your fault. This is a fabricated lie. Lifestyle choices create these challenges. If you chose freakish foods – processed and laced with colourings, preservatives, flavours and additives than expect to change your chemical makeup resulting in a toxic nerve system, an inability to express health and increased adipose tissue! You are the only one to change with way you express your health.

Let’s face it… disease always has a cause and the cause usually has to do with 1) a nerve system that has road blocks in its communication with every cell, organ and tissue in the body, 2) nutritional deficiencies, 3) exposure to toxic chemicals and 4) sedentary lifestyle. Clear the road blocks, eat well and get moving so you express health differently!

Lie #8 Go to hospital they really are places of health and healing

Here is my response to this BIG LIE … if you go in get out FAST! These are far from nurturing places of health and healing. With iatrogenic death (death by the system itself) the leading cause of death in many western world countries my suggestion is to think twice about entering. Surgeries that are mistakenly performed also contribute to the demise of hospital health and healing. Emergency areas/rooms serve a purpose for horrendous accidents and injuries however for everyday challenges as well as acute, chronic and degenerative health challenges I certainly advocate and choose to look elsewhere. Health challenges can be changed by choosing to educate yourself about your nerve system; your internal super highway of communication between your brain and body (cells, tissues, organs and systems) and back again. Your nerve system is the master communicating system for the whole of your body. Choose to become educated on the role it plays, make an appointment with a chiropractor. Chiropractors are the go-to people who specifically work with the nerve system and your innate capabilities to express health. When you do I KNOW you’ll choose to do health differently.

Lie #9) Mainstream health is ‘up to date’

It is certainly not modern! When there’s a mechanistic system that is perpetuating for example the germ theory, which is really OUT DATED, than there’s a problem. The lie enlarges so much so that people begin to believe it. Looking down the barrel of a microscope with specifically activated ‘belief filters’ will enable a person/company to find the results they’re looking for. People have moved on from the world being flat to being round! Isn’t it time to lay to rest that germs are bad, are everywhere and need to be gotten rid of? However, to do so would mean shutting down industries from the cleaning businesses to the product businesses to the manufacturers. You can see how this could have a devastating effect on economic contribution. So … it’s easier to perpetuate the lie that makes money than it is too speak the truth. This is NOT advanced and modern medicine.

Lie #10 Give us money to find those ‘cures’

Here is the answer to the lie that a cure needs to be found. Answer: there never will be one. There is no vested interest from any company in the mechanistic approach to health to finding a cure. However, there is a vested interest in shaping the advertising and conversations that have you believe there is a cure around the corner therefore tugging on your heart strings which then sees you donate. Lie, lie and lie again! This lie has been repeated for example since the 1960s, when cancer scientists claimed they were only a few years away from curing cancer. Today, four decades later, can you think of a single major disease that western medicine has cured? There aren’t any! Why … because the only person that can cure you is you. Incurable means curable from within. People make money from sick people, uneducated people, people who don’t want to take responsibility for their health. In doing so people get tugged into the profitable vortex where lifelong addictions to medications are pushed to manage the sickness that happened to them on that unlucky day.

Time to wake up …

I’m sure you are well aware that there are more than 10 lies being told to the public. Depending on your level of knowledge will depend on which lies you buy into – some, a few, all or none. The ones I share here are the ones I feel are most relevant to your health decisions right now. By knowing about these lies you begin taking charge of your own and your child’s health! Staying healthy isn’t as difficult as you’ve been told, might think or lead to believe. All the insurance, screenings and drugs in the world ain’t going to keep you healthy. In fact the opposite is true. ‘Buying in’ perpetuates your sickness path.

When you take responsibility for your health, when you acknowledge that EVERYTHING that has taken place in your life was because of the choices you made at that time you begin to express a different attitude to health. As your attitude changes you engage with new people, different people, whose ideas about health are different to yours. You begin to set a different course for yourself and your children. Your old thoughts about health and where it comes from begin to dissolve. New thoughts are established that embrace your nerve system, your physical, chemical and your emotional body. You acknowledge that life is not happening to you that you indeed are the creator of everything that has taken place and everything that will take place going forward. Your world awakens to what is possible, your relationships transform and you begin to be IN LIFE!

The path to expressing health and staying healthy requires you to make informed, intelligent decisions about your lifestyle. Being aware of the symbiotic relationship between your physical, chemical and emotional self and your nerve system will be a most beneficial place to start. Once you acknowledge this relationship you’ll find you’re no longer a victim to a system that doesn’t serve health.

Turning A Mess Into A Message

For years, in fact decade’s people and professions have been targeted with a clear intent to shut them down. This was seen years ago in the well documented and famous Wilk’s case where five chiropractors took on the AMA and won1.  Up until 1974, the AMA had a Committee on quackery which targeted and challenged what it considered to be unscientific forms of healing. This then moved to Quackbusters and Quackwatch which made fallacious attacks by mainstream medicine on honest alternative and alternate approaches to health. In each case the people won. The alternative and alternate approaches are gaining, not losing, ground in public acceptance despite the best efforts of organisations to shut them down. As a mother and a health professional I have supported people via crowd sourcing and on petition sites like change.org donating financially to help them fight for their right to deliver information and practice their chosen alternative or alternate health approach. It wasn’t that long ago that I come face to face with what it meant to be within a system that is completely against (purposefully or naively) what you espouse, know and teach.

This is the story.

Three days before my 43rd birthday, my life changed.

I was at home on the phone and in walked our nanny. She’d arrived home with two of our three children. Our eldest was at home with me, lying asleep in our bed, with a health expression he had created for himself a few days prior. I was on the phone interviewing a new person for a different position in my company.

I sensed that something was up; not quite right. I got up and walked towards her muting the phone and called out “is everything okay?”

It was like a tiger being let out of a cage…

I walked closer to our bedroom where she was standing and our eldest was lying. I noticed she’d pulled the doona off him waking him up. She began yelling “I can’t believe he has water bottles in the bed with him and he is as hot as anything” I reminded her that he is in my bed and the water bottles were for me from the night before and they are cold. She proceeded to the freezer to get out something frozen to place on his fore head. He looked at me with a confused, puzzled look having never at the age of 8 had something frozen on his head before. After she did this I stood in the kitchen frozen, paralyzed wondering what was going on.

She turned on me again and pointed at my middle boy who stood over near the couch also looking at me with confused eyes and yelled “do you know he has a temperature?”

“And?” I said

“His temperature is 38.7C”

“And?” I said

“Well that is dangerously high and he could have a fit.”

“What’s your point?” I said

She continued finishing with the one line that I knew was about to change my world…

“I have no choice but to call CYF’s” (aka child services) she said.

My vacant stare must have said it all. This lady had been in our employ for 2 years taking great care of the children and loving them. She also knew our approach to health; no drugs, no medications, no medical intervention. Our kids were all born at home, are non vaccinated, non medicated and had not been to a medical doctor. What is consistent in their life are regular adjustments and the AlterNATE Vitalistic approach to health that I teach here at Vital Moms. They have been educated since birth about health, the human body and it’s expression which includes innate intelligence, health expressions (what others may call sickness) and what they create for themselves is an opportunity to grow.

My husband and I are chiropractors living in a vitalistic health approach which we have done for decades. We acknowledge we are self healing self regulating organisms and constantly adapt to our environment. All three of our kids are educated this way too. They are taught that what they create brings with it opportunities to ask different questions and do life differently.

At 1:00pm on July 22nd the phone call came through. CYF’s (child services) had phoned my husband informing us that we were on a critical child abuser list because we were “denying children the right to medical treatment”.  We informed child services that as doctors of chiropractic we serve vast numbers of children in this particular situation – that in fact parents bring their children to us to receive adjustments rather then choosing to medicate.

We also informed CTF’s that our children did NOT have temperatures despite

what our nanny had told them.

Our only option to clear our name off the critical list was to take our children to a medical doctor to verify that they in fact they did not have temperatures. Our nanny had told the authorities that our middle boy had a temperature of 39.7C; she told me it was 38.7C.

All of a sudden our right to choose what health approach we wanted for ourselves and our children was in jeopardy.

Before we went I sat the kids on the couch and said “kids we are going to go and jump through some hoops. Today will be a new experience for us all and it will no doubt bring up lots of questions for us to share. Today is your first appointment with a medical doctor and she will be jumping through the hoop with us.”

So off we went as a family ready to have an experience.

Eventually it was our turn. She took each child’s temperature and, no surprise to us, the kid’s temperatures were normal… 38, 37.2, 36.8. We assumed it was all over.

Little did we know…

You have no rights over your children as you go through a process such as this. You are left in the lurch; no one contacts you, no one lets you know when your status has changed.

Eventually we got in contact with the CYF’s lady who said “Yes this appears to be an unsubstantiated allegation and we’re going to close it”.

My husband phoned me at the practice speaking through the tears of joy he told me “they called and they have closed the allegation”. I cried with him. We celebrated with the kids that night. We all went to bed relieved and exhausted.

The next day however the house wasn’t so calm…

CYF’s rang in the morning and informed us there had been a misunderstanding and a miscommunication and the allegation was indeed NOT closed. They informed us that they would be coming over to the island to meet with us”.

All of a sudden the rules had changed; allegation open, allegation closed, allegation re-opened and now they were coming to our house!

“What for?” I screamed at my husband.

“Why are they coming here and why are they changing the rules”. I felt like a lion roaring to protect the cubs.

My husband wasn’t sure. In his mind he was attempting to make sense of it all too.

They arrived at our house the following week.

They told us that this was a “routine visit” and when they go back to their offices this afternoon the case would be closed.  Before that happened however they had to have a meeting with their supervisor and other colleagues to approve the closure.

For 7 weeks after that “routine visit” no one from CYF’s called us. We called CYFs many times, leaving messages… on one returned our calls. After a lot of frustration and conversations with lawyers CYF’s eventually called us to close the case. However we realized that this just wasn’t simply about a supposed fever and not giving drugs it was about how we are choosing to raise our children – home grown, home educated kids who are empowered to learn about health, the human body and it’s expression. This experience inspired me to establish Vital Moms with a vision to share information to support you in your health choice. I wanted to create a place where you feel supported and encouraged in making decisions about your child’s health. All parents have a right to choose what health approach they want for themselves and their children; we’re protecting that right!

Are You In A Rush To Get Your Health Back?

Every process we go through requires time. Whether it is the aging process, the birth of a child, job promotions, graduating, or learning new skills like walking, talking or riding a bike. Reaching new milestones and new levels in understanding takes time. I imagine we all agree with this so much so that we place a value on it. For instance, time is money and medals, every second counts, there’s no time to waste, if we don’t go now we won’t have time, if its not there in 30 minutes it’s free! People even get impatient in the drive-through for the “fast food”. Most people want instant gratification and immediate results, just like the instant microwave dinner that is “cooked” in one minute.

So many things take time. Cooking a turkey at Christmas takes three or four hours, pregnancy takes nine months and career achievements take time. Yet when it comes to our bodies we seem to be a lot less tolerant of the process of time. The innate time of your body is vastly different to the man-made time of “I want it done yesterday.”

Anything quick, artificial or that has an easy option to it will probably only give you short term results and may have an altered long-term effect on your body.

Let’s look at the nervous system.

When we have a sprained ankle, we generally stay off it. When we break our arm or leg, it is usually put in plaster and immobilized. Is it because the arms and legs are so imperative to daily activities that we notice it more when something is amiss? When plaster is applied to a fracture, the fracture is immobilized and you could be out of pain within days. Does that mean you can remove the plaster and start using the arm or leg again? Certainly not. The cast reminds us that we have time left in the healing process. A scab on the skin reminds us that the healing process is still taking place. But what is there to remind us that the nervous system is regaining its optimum health expression? Nothing. This is the risk we get into when we think that because there is no scab, pain or cast, and no symptoms, we must be “healthy” and healed.

It has been my observation that we tend to follow the recommendations outlined to us for healing when it is an extremity, such as the appendicular skeleton that is symptomatically expressing in some way and preventing us from undertaking certain activities. Yet we seem to easily compromise the central aspects of the body, the axial skeleton. In my observation small indicators of pain such as a niggle, headache, or a dull ache are ignored until we are unable to bear it any longer. We then reach for care outside of our self, often entertaining unrealistic expectations about the healing process. When we think in this way, we live in the allopathic paradigm where something from the outside supposedly takes care of the inside. We want change as soon as possible, however are usually unwilling to change any of our lives (physically, chemically or emotionally) in order to help the body to help itself in the healing it can do. People often want change at all costs, and they invariably want it rectified yesterday however it is not until later in life that the “quick fix” early in life is paid for.

When people come into the practice, one of the most important pieces of information I share with them is the initial tissue healing time of the body, which generally takes 6-8 weeks. Even though we may experience a reduction in their symptomatic expression, that doesn’t mean we are healed and healthy. All it means is that the symptoms are reduced and the body is now able to communicate with itself more clearly. The body is still on its journey to healing, but is not yet healed. However, what if we changed your emotional (thought) and chemical (toxin) realities as well and not just the physical (trauma)?

George was eight when he came into the office with his parents who were beside themselves, trying to work out how to alleviate the severe constipation their son had been experiencing for two-and-a-half weeks. They had tried all and sundry with little success. George described passing a stool as very painful. At this stage George was trying to hold on rather than experience the pain of attempting to go to the bathroom.

Upon receiving a series of physical adjustments, he started to change his internal environment and his body was able to coordinate the peristaltic movement to propel the fecal material through the intestinal system. The adjustments changed his life. No longer was he straining to pass a stool nor having the feeling of being bound up. An emotional technique used in the practice was also run to help the family deal with any emotional issues felt to be binding him up. George had recently changed schools and a new sibling had been introduced to the family. His parents found a huge relief when they were asked certain questions about his life to date. After the first adjustment, young George was able to pass a stool. His body, post-adjustment, was now coordinating a series of events in order to create greater states of health. The emotional issues brought to the surface were able to be integrated for the parents and you could see George’s body relax into a feeling of “somebody now knows what I have been experiencing.”

The chemical component was also discussed, which his parents were also dedicated to changing. George’s life had changed as a result of this interaction. On subsequent appointments to the office George found himself racing to the toilet before getting adjusted: his body knew how the adjustment would be received and his innate intelligence was allowing him to reach new states in his health expression at all levels.

Now, George and his parents could have decided after one successful trip to the bathroom that he no longer needed to work on this area of his health expression. Yet he and his parents realized that it takes time to readjust the internal system and, likewise, acknowledged they needed to invest time into this process.

This young man still receives chiropractic care today ― his family recognizes that the adjustment is NOT about alleviating symptoms from the body in order to “feel better” but rather allowing your life to be the best it can be in all areas. He’s now a 16-year-old budding sports professional, and upon completion of school wants to make a go of it on the professional circuit.

The emotional component of healing is an interesting process for a lot of people. Some people, although wishing to get well, actually find they benefit from where they are in their present situation. Making a decision between the supposed benefits they receive from their current situation, and the genuine benefit that comes with having each system in their body functioning at its optimum level is a challenge for them. Some want change but are too scared to embrace the new self to truly see what they may gain from the change. Most only see the loss.

All processes in life take time ― whether a flower is blossoming, the sun is rising, a storm is brewing, or tissue is healing. With time comes clarity and perspective ― at all levels: physical, chemical and emotional.

I appreciate that the power that made the body has the ability to heal the body. It simply… takes time.
